Logo Design Evolution Assignment

History of the Google Logo
By: Delilah Eryavec

The first Google logo made was created and used in 1997 but has since been changed and modified a total of seven times, the most recent being released on September 1st, 2015, and is still in use at the moment. Each is still recognizable and relatively similar to the last but, the logo we see today is still drastically different from the original design. Along with the logo itself the ‘Google Doodle’ that appears on the Google homepage celebrating people, holiday’s, events, etc., and the Google icon (or favicon) has also developed and changed.

This is the original logo from 1997. The logo from 1998-1999, the icon from 2009. And the logo from 2015-present, and the icon from 2015-present.

The exclamation point added onto the logo in 1999 was short lived, being taken from the logo in the next design in the same year. But, the color juggling experiment seemed to stick, and is still being used in the most recent design. For a while Google had used shading and shadow to make a somewhat 3D, popping off the screen, look; but turned to a flat logo in 2013-2015. The logo today is more readable at smaller sizes because of its flat appearance, is still using the same color scheme that was introduced in 1999- which probably won’t change anytime soon. The logo and favicon of today is modern and flat, using a minimalist style that is popularly seen today. Since Google has been around for-now-a somewhat long time, and is now one of the biggest world-wide used search-engines today, any logo design change it’s made/will make is/has been recognizable even with the changes.
