Principles + Elements
What is
graphic design?
-Design
elements are the basic units of visual image
-A
message you want to communicate can be made with visual communication. I.e.,
graphic design.
-Graphic
design is apart of every day life. (posters, billboards, gum wrappers)
-Uses
image and typography.
Design
Elements:
-Space:
(Sense of depth, Positive + Neg. Space)
-Line: (Basic
element; you can vary line style, very strong design element)
-Color:
(To invoke a certain style; look at color pallet. Color invokes
emotion)
-Shape:
(Certain shapes can invoke emotion; nostalgia. Shapes should
interact)
-Texture:
(Texture is difficult to achieve, adds life, adds depth and visual
interest)
-Value:
(Shading, takes 2D to 3D, range of gradation, creates sense of
value)
-Balance:
(A visual weight; not perfectly symmetrical, balance can be
defined in different ways)
Design
Principles:
-Unity:
(A sense of order, consistency, also can show a lack of unity,
everything working together to
stabilize the final vision)
-Variety:
(Experiments while still having unity)
-Repetition:
(Colors, shapes, and angles being repeated to still make a sense
of unity)
-Harmony:
(Similar to unity, can be broken up, but still have everything
work together)
-Proximity:
(Important, you can disrupt unity by changing proximity,
proximity, use white space)
-Proportion:
(Important, changes perception, can create space and
dimension)
-Emphasis:
(The focal point, what your eye is drawn to)
-Functionality:
(Overall; designs must be functional, goal is communication,
substance is greater than
style)
